Historic Places of Worship

Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church (shown above)
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and opened in 1961, The Church of the Annunciation is a Milwaukee architectural jewel.  The church illustrates Wright's interest in circular design and is entirely formed of reinforced concrete, with a seating capacity of more than 1,000.

The Basilica of St. Josaphat
The Basilica of Saint Josaphat is a Minor Basilica created by Pope Pius XI in 1929 (the third church so honored in the United States). Patterned after St. Peter's in Rome, it has all the elements of a classical Romanesque basilica and is recognized by the city of Milwaukee as an officially designated landmark.

The Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians, at Holy Hill
Holy Hill, located 30 miles northwest of Milwaukee amid breathtaking scenery at 1,300 feet above sea level, is a historic sacred site and a registered state and national landmark.  The Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians, which sits atop Holy Hill, attracts more than 300,000 pilgrims and visitors each year.

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist
The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist has been the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee for 150 years.  The Cathedral is designed in an austere German style known as Zopfstil and built of Milwaukee brick.  The Cathedral has been designated a Milwaukee landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historical Places.
